Guest Post: Know how to make Small Businesses work as Brands ...

Guest post by Martin Zine

There are a variety of hurdles for small business owners who intend to develop a company with brand in mind. Of course all small business owners understand the value of brand, of how associations of being established lead to revenue growth. Yet, there are a handful of mistakes small business owners continually make as they work to make the transition from direct marketing to brand awareness.?

1. Inability to tolerate ad spend to increase long term exposure: Perhaps the most challenging of all aspects of brand development for any business owner is the fact that ad spend when developing brand is far different than it is for any direct marketing campaign. Advertising spend in order to develop brand requires a long view of ROI, which is often times well beyond the ability of many near-sighted business owners. The fact is, brand development does have a built- in ROI; however, this ROI cannot be realised immediately. Unlike a direct marketing campaign, ROI for brand development can take multiple business quarters before being realized, and unfortunately many small business owners launch a business with the mindset of "this thing needs to make money right out of the gate." Overextending expectations and demanding return too quickly is a sure-fire way to erode brand development and reduce the likelihood of business survivability.?

2. Inability to differentiate product or service: it is through product or service differentiation that brands define themselves. These iterations need not be immense. The difference in experience from a Nordstrom to a Macy's -- in terms of brand development -- is not as severe as one may think. Both corporate retailers provide clothing for men, women and children. Both corporate retailers also try to keep up with trends in fashion. However, the idea of service and the sort of quality of product that one store provides in comparison to the other is dramatic. This slight, albeit consistent, iteration is what defines the Nordstrom brand. Inability to differentiate a product or delivery of service is necessary in order to entrench brand awareness to any community.?

3. Following challengers: this third obstacle is perhaps one of the most difficult for small business owners. The challenge of navigating the marketplace and not latching onto some of the traits of already established service or product providers within the niche is severe. It is difficult to not try to follow the lead of an established provider; however, in the process of developing brand, copycats more often than not simply look like copycats.?

4. Failure to lead within the industry: the easiest way to develop an identity that is distinguishable is to lead an industry. Perhaps the simplest way to develop brand is to look at an industry with fresh eyes, and address the industry truly as a consumer rather than a provider. Leadership, particularly within an industry, is all about distinguishing ability; and it is through any sort of distinguished presence that brand is best developed. Often times the best way to address a leadership role within a particular industry is not to focus solely on one industry, rather to locate business leaders in other industries and see the sort of iterations or changes that they have made to their product or service development in order to distinguish their businesses.?

There are a variety of reasons beyond the four listed above that get at some of the failures on the part of small business owners in an effort to grow brand. The process of brand development is one that simply requires
sustained effort and honest commitment to long-term goals. Perhaps the most challenging aspect of business development, particularly for those without experience in the field of community awareness, is the time and energy needed
to truly launch any serious effort to define a brand. Even with a serious effort in mind, and the willingness to commit to a long view in terms of
marketing, there still is the challenge of differentiating a product or service in a way that distinguishes itself.?

DIY theremin goggles marry the art of noise with steampunk style (video)

DIY theremin goggles marries the art of noise with steampunk style

Sometimes annoying just isn't annoying enough. For DIY enthusiast and self-described "maker of awesome" Sarah Petkus, the incentive to irk was merely a happy by-product of her latest goggle design. The steampunk-ish effort, chronicled on Petkus' blog Robotic Arts, combines some artfully arranged scrap metals with an integrated optical theremin that lets the wearer manipulate an incredibly unpleasant tone just by waving their hands and adjusting the amount of light fed into the sensors. Since the volume control and speaker are housed inside the eyepieces, the goggles are little more than a head-mounted accessory. But that shouldn't stop cosplay types (or sociopaths) from strapping on a set and tweaking the nerves of unfortunate passers-by. That's if Petkus gets around to selling the "eyewear." For the public's sake, we hope this inventive mod remains a one-off. Head past the break for a video demo of this cringe-inducing, gesture-controlled cacaphony.

Confirmed: Nexus 4 now shipping with updated design

Nexus 4 redesign

Small nubs now lift the back of the phone up off a table; camera lens gets a slight redesign

Android Central has confirmed that the Nexus 4 has undergone a little bit of a design tweak. As first reported by German site MobiFlip. there are now a couple of small nubs on the rear of the phone, where the glass meets the foot, positioned just above the two screw holes.

We've confirmed the change on a pair of Nexus 4s we ordered on Monday this week and received on Wednesday. In the image above, our original Nexus 4, now some four months old, is on top, with a new retail unit (still in its protective plastic) at the bottom. Note the little nub between the screw holes of the two phones.

This small design change has a couple of effects. It lifts phone up ever so slightly, allowing sound to escape the flush speaker. It also should help keep the glass back from getting the little hairline scratches it's been prone to pick up.

Google clashes with Swedes over 'ungoogleable'

(AP) ? Sweden's language watchdog has accused Google of trying to control the Swedish language in a dispute over the definition of the colloquial term "ungoogleable."

The Swedish version of the word ? "ogooglebar" ? made the Language Council of Sweden's 2012 list of words that aren't in the Swedish dictionary but have entered common parlance. The council defined it as something "that cannot be found on the Web with a search engine."

But Google objected, asking for changes showing the expression specifically refers to Google searches and a disclaimer saying Google is a registered trademark, the council said Tuesday.

Rather than changing the definition, the council deleted the word from the list, while stressing "our displeasure with Google's attempts to control the language."

Google refrained from commenting on the matter directly.

"While Google, like many businesses, takes routine steps to protect our trademarks, we are pleased that users connect the Google name with great search results," Google spokesman Gustaf Brusewitz said in an email.

Overweight riders risk their horse's health | Habitat For Horses ...

Only 5% of those questioned were a healthy weight for their horse ?sxc

Recent research has revealed that a third of riders are too heavy for their horses, causing them to suffer from back pain, lameness and behavioural problems.

Extreme health impact

The study, which was published in the Journal of Veterinary Behaviour, assessed 152 horses and their riders in Devon and Cornwall. A shocking 32% of riders weighed more than 15% of the weight of their horse, which means they are putting their horses? health at risk.

?People tend to think horses are such big animals they must be okay, and not to take notice of the weight issue of riders,? said Dr Hayley Randle, from the Duchy College in Cornwall. ?But the health impact on the horse can be quite extreme, quite quickly.?

Guidelines

Only eight (5%) of those questioned weighed less than 10% of the weight of their horse, which adheres to recommended veterinary guidelines. Ninety-five riders (62%) weighed between 10% and 15%, which is considered ?satisfactory?.

According to Dr Randle, who carried out the research with her colleague Emma Halliday, while these are just ?broad-brush guidelines? they do give an idea of the weight-baring capabilities of each horse.

?

?The problem is that these ratios are not widely known by people in the horse industry,? she said. ?People do seem generally to be a bit heavy for horses. That is just a consequence, I suppose, of our average weights going up. It is definitely a potential welfare issue.?

President of the British Equine Veterinary Association, Keith Chandler, agrees that many health problems, such as lameness and back problems, are caused by ?the wrong riders on the wrong horses?.

?Many riding schools are very aware of these problems and exactly who can ride which horses and who cannot, but there are some horse people who may not fully understand the issues,? he said. ?There is a discussion which needs to take place in the horse riding community. There needs to be an awareness that some larger riders need to ride bigger horses.?

Insight: Money fled Cyprus as president fumbled bailout

By Annika Breidthardt, Luke Baker and Michele Kambas

BRUSSELS/NICOSIA (Reuters) - As new President Nicos Anastasiades hesitated over an EU bailout that has wrecked Cyprus's offshore financial haven status, money was oozing out of his country's closed banks.

In banknotes at cash machines and exceptional transfers for "humanitarian supplies", large amounts of euros fled the east Mediterranean island before and after Cypriot lawmakers stunned Europe by rejecting a levy on all bank deposits.

EU negotiators knew something was wrong when the Central Bank of Cyprus requested more banknotes from the European Central Bank than the withdrawals it was reporting to Frankfurt implied were needed, an EU source familiar with the process said. "The amount the Cypriots mentioned... on a daily basis was much less than it was in reality," the source said.

Confusion over just how much money was pulled out of Cyprus' banks is illustrative of the confusion surrounding the negotiations as a whole. Representing just 0.2 percent of the euro zone economy, Cyprus nevertheless threatened to reignite the bloc's debt crisis. Cyprus' problems began in Greece - it is heavily exposed to the euro zone's first bailout casualty.

No one knows exactly how much money has left Cyprus' banks, or where it has gone. The two banks at the center of the crisis - Cyprus Popular Bank, also known as Laiki, and Bank of Cyprus - have units in London which remained open throughout the week and placed no limits on withdrawals. Bank of Cyprus also owns 80 percent of Russia's Uniastrum Bank, which put no restrictions on withdrawals in Russia. Russians were among Cypriot banks' largest depositors.

While ordinary Cypriots queued at ATM machines to withdraw a few hundred euros as credit card transactions stopped, other depositors used an array of techniques to access their money.

Companies that had to meet margin calls to avoid defaulting on deals were granted funds. Transfers for trade in humanitarian products, medicines and jet fuel were allowed.

Chris Pavlou, who was vice chairman of Laiki until Friday, said while some money was withdrawn over a period of several days it was in the order of millions of euros, not billions.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said the bank closure had limited capital flight but that the ECB was looking closely at the issue. He declined to provide figures.

BIG DEPOSITORS BURNED

Big depositors, including wealthy Russians and Britons, whom the Cypriot president had sought to shield from a levy of any more than 10 percent on their holdings, will end up being far more severely burned - if their money is still there.

Under a bailout deal sealed early on Monday morning in snowy Brussels, Cyprus will have to shut its second largest bank and inflict heavy losses on large account holders the two biggest.

Deposits over 100,000 euros in both will be frozen and used to resolve the debts of the defunct Laiki and recapitalise Bank of Cyprus. Both banks were hurt by their exposure to Greek sovereign debt when bondholders were forced to take writedowns last year.

By Sunday, one participant in the negotiations said, there was almost no capital left in Laiki, a bank whose market value peaked at 8.1 billion euros in November 2007. Laiki's former vice chairman Pavlou disagreed, estimating there had been 2.5 billion euros in foreign deposits alone.

No figure was announced for the scale of the "haircut" on big depositors, but it will be nearer to 50 percent than to the 15 percent that Anastasiades rejected on March 15, participants in the negotiations said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

To enable him to negotiate with politicians of his own protocol rank, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso conducted the talks with Anastasiades, elected last month.

At one point on Sunday afternoon, the conservative president threatened to resign in an emotional exchange with the heads of the EU institutions and the International Monetary Fund.

The troika of lenders called his bluff, saying that if he quit they would continue negotiations with the speaker of the Cypriot parliament, next in line constitutionally, a participant in the talks said. Anastasiades stayed.

For months, bailout talks with his Soviet-educated Communist predecessor, Demetris Christofias, had gone nowhere due to his refusal to privatize state assets. "Christofias didn't want to be the president who had signed a bailout with the troika," an EU official said.

The cost of a rescue kept on mounting. By the time the new leader was ready to do a deal, the IMF and Germany were demanding a 40 percent across-the-board bail-in of creditors and depositors in the two main banks.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said Berlin had achieved exactly what it sought in exchange for the 10 billion euro financial rescue - that creditors and uninsured depositors in the two biggest Cypriot banks should share the load.

"This is bitter for Cyprus but we now have the result that the (German) government always stood out for," he said.

An EU source said the IMF and Germany had initially wanted to go further and wind down both Laiki and Bank of Cyprus.

European politicians, anxious to deflect criticism for having been party to an initial deal 10 days ago that would have imposed a levy on all small savers in Cyprus, rushed to say that Nicosia had only itself to blame.

"To all those who say that we are strangling an entire people ... Cyprus is a casino economy that was on the brink of bankruptcy," French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said.

He said he had always opposed taxing deposits smaller than 100,000 euros, which are subject to an EU guarantee. Yet neither he nor other ministers or European Commission officials spoke out against the idea at the March 15 meeting, participants said.

Only when a firestorm of protest erupted in Cyprus and it became clear the Cypriot parliament would not endorse the plan did they belated call for accounts under the 100,000 euro threshold to be left untouched.

MIDNIGHT IN MOSCOW

Perhaps the most disastrous episode in a week of blunders and miscalculation was the Cypriot attempt to persuade Russia to provide alternative finance in return for future access to the island's untapped offshore gas reserves.

Cypriot lawmakers overplayed their hand in rejecting the deposit levy in the misguided belief that Moscow would come to the island's aid. Cypriot Finance Minister Michael Sarris was dispatched to Moscow without any clear gameplan or mandate the day after the 56-member legislature voted 36-0 to reject the levy, a source close to his delegation said.

After a frosty initial meeting on Wednesday, at which his Russian counterpart offered nothing in response to his request for a new 5 billion euro loan and easier repayment terms on an existing 2.5 billion euro credit, Sarris was left to stew in his suite at the Lotte Plaza hotel on Moscow's Garden Ring.

Russian gas monopoly Gazprom denied reports that it was considering lending Cyprus money in return for future access to its gas, and VTB, Russia's number two bank, disavowed any interest in buying Laiki.

The Russians kept Sarris waiting all day Thursday. Talks only resumed at 9 p.m. and went nowhere. By midnight, he knew he would be returning to Nicosia the next morning empty-handed, although his hotel suite was booked until Monday.

The European Commission and the ECB had quietly told the Russian Finance Ministry and central bank that any further loan from Moscow would just add to Cypriot debt and hence undermine the basis for an EU-IMF bailout, sources with knowledge of the exchange said.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev accused the EU of handling the Cyprus crisis "like a bull in a china shop". He and President Vladimir Putin complained to visiting European Commission President Barroso that Moscow should have been consulted before the decision to impose a levy on depositors.

Barroso responded that Europe and Russia each had their own procedures and he was not there to negotiate with Russia about Cyprus, an EU source familiar with the talks said. Despite Kremlin anger, Moscow decided it would not let itself be played off against Brussels.

ECB POWER

The most powerful force pushing Cyprus to accept a deal was the European Central Bank, which for months had kept the country afloat despite growing internal misgivings about the banks' solvency.

Hours before the ECB announced that it would turn off the ELA taps for Cypriot banks on Monday, a Cypriot lawmaker said: "Anastasiades is just trying to scare parliament. The ECB would never do that, it needs a two thirds majority."

ECB officials contacted Latvia, another EU country that has received large Russian deposits, to warn authorities against taking in Russian money fleeing Cyprus, two sources familiar with the contacts said.

"It was made clear to our Latvian friends that if they want to join the euro, they should not provide a haven for Russian money exiting Cyprus," a euro zone central banker said.

Even after a week of drama in Nicosia and disillusionment in Moscow, Anastasiades and his team seemed not to comprehend when they arrived in Brussels on Sunday the magnitude of the collapse they were facing.

"It took more time for the Cypriots and the Cypriot authorities to fully understand what their options were and how deep the crisis was," Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the Dutch chairman of euro zone finance ministers, told Reuters in an interview.

"It's hard for me to say what made the penny drop, I think it was probably because it was five to midnight, literally it was five to midnight, and we were not making much progress and we simply said to the Cypriots: 'look, we're ready to help you, there's 10 billion available, but you have to realise what the present situation is. You have to act now. Political choices have run out.' There was a deadline. And that worked."

Knox will get Italian high court's decision

ROME (AP) ? Italy's highest court says it will issue a decision Tuesday morning on whether to overturn American student Amanda Knox's acquittal in the murder of her roommate.

The court heard six hours of arguments on Monday before going into deliberations. After several hours, it announced it would issue the decision at 10 a.m. (0900 GMT) Tuesday, an unusual but not unprecedented move.

The high court normally issues the decisions the same day it hears arguments. But prosecutor general Luigio Riello told reporters that "in very complex cases, it happens" that the court takes another day.

Lawyers for Knox's co-defendant, Raffaele Sollecito, declined to speculate on what the delay could mean for the decision. Both were acquitted in 2011.
